The Author

Hi, I’m Sonja. Those who know me well know that I love and adore my family. I am exceedingly thankful for my beautiful husband, William (married 23 years and counting), and exceptionally proud of our extraordinary son and daughter. As our children begin their young adults lives, my husband and I are transitioning into the empty-nester phase and moving closer towards realizing our dream of becoming family therapists. Our passion is prosperous families. Over the years, friends, colleagues, and acquaintances have suggested that I write a book about rearing successful African American children. Our son and daughter were leaders and stellar students at two of the top prep schools in the country. Our son then thrived at Yale and our daughter will soon do the same at WashU St. Louis –  two of the nation’s best universities. Many ask how we managed to nurture confident, socially- and culturally-grounded, and academically successful black children. Blackchildsuccess is my attempt to share our parenting philosophy and story. I hope you enjoy reading.

  1. Wonderful reading. From a very early age I knew that both of them would turn out exactly the way that they have — because of their parents. I feel love a fear at the same time constantly since becoming a mother!

  2. Hi Sonja, thank you for sharing your experiences through such a phenomenal blog! Over the years my husband (Dennis) would speak of his friend from DC, and his great family. Your story is a true testimony of the successful dividends parents achieve when they love, nurture and challenge their children. I look forward to spending time at your site, and reading through all the great posts. Have a lovely day.
    Blessings, Crystal Dailey
